Beginnings
In circa 1953, C.M. Lee, an elder of the Seventh-day Adentist
Chinese Church offered a piece of land (20,000 sq feet) at 297A
Thomson Road for a church building. Since the rganization had
no immediate plan to start the building project, Elder Lee single-handedly
initiated a building plan. Not only did he plan for a church,
which he later donated, to seat 500 worshipers he also designed
its basement to include six classrooms and two offices for future
use as a school. He was very supportive of Christian education.
In 1956 Wang Fu Nan, an architect, was engaged to draw the building
plans and Chin Too Min, also a church elder, was the supervisor
of the construction. The building was completed in 1957. The members
of the Chinese Church donated the furnishing and fixtures. The
church, which used to meet in a building at Penang Road, commenced
regular worship services in the new building at Thomson Road at
the end of the same year. On January 18, 1958 the church was dedicated
in a solemn and grand ceremony. Shortly after, the San Yu High
School began its operation in the basement of the church.
